U.S. Patent No. 7,105,939 B2                                                                                 Date of Patent: September 12, 2006

A KINETIC / ELECTRICAL POWER GENERATOR

Gist of Invention

A miniature/mobile power Generator captures/utilizes the in-chamber rolling balls’ energy for pendulum-like accelerated oscillation of the chamber housing weight, so to cause the supporting shaft’s frequent rotations for generation of electrical (via an electro-mechanical mini-transducer) or kinetic/rotational energy.

Advantages

  1. This miniature Generator is self-powered as its tiny metal balls are caused to roll about each other in the weight’s chamber due to the Generator-carrier’s multi-directional movements, such as a drone’s yaw/ pitch/ roll flight actions, wrist’s or head’s oscillation/ rotation/ bending/ shaking during a person’s daily functional activities, or an upper torso’s movements affecting the body-installed medical device.

  2. Its simple/lightweight design facilitates inexpensive manufacturing as standard metal balls used in ball bearings, or ceramic, or stone balls can be used with minimum labor and material costs.

  3. Air dynamic weight and balls are polished to reduce the air drag’s drain of power and increase the velocity and frequency of the weight’s rotational movements and consequent device efficiency. Also, the air viscosity is minimized by the chamber’s constant atmospheric pressure, temperature and humidity affecting the in-chamber balls’ rolling movements.                                                                     .

  4. Unlike pendulum clocks, which must be motionless to operate, Generator’s multidirectional motions and weight accelerations are needed for its operation.

  5. It needs a very low force threshold for the weight’s movement initiation.

  6. It can harvest the incessantly wasted kinetic/ inertial energy produced by the operating machines’ vibration, wobbling/ fluctuation of bridges, dynamic forces of people’s feet projected onto shoe soles and on high-traffic supporting floors or walkways.

  7. It can capture a few watts of power from the human body’s activities, such as eating, drinking, walking, running, swinging arms while exercising/ walking or typing on keyboards for producing electricity via Generator-powered battery wearable on a body parts or integrated into the clothing.

Invention Applications

  1. Perpetual / rechargeable batteries for smartphones / laptops/ tablets, drones, glasses w/ video capabilities, health monitors/ sensors, CCTV cameras, tracking chips, hearing aid, and other wearable, implanted or portable devices.

  2. Spring-winding mechanisms in mechanical/ electro-mechanical (quartz) watches, or other mechanical apparatuses.

  3. Construction-related sensors for constant monitoring of the hard-to-access or seismic zone structures’ conditions, i.e.  skyscrapers, pipelines, bridges, etc.

  4. Medical / implantable devices such as pacemakers (heart pump’s vibrations on the order of tens of milliwatts can fire up Generator), drug delivering micro pumps, neurological stimulators, heart rate/ blood sugar/ blood pressure and other health condition monitoring devices to avoid a device installation and removal surgeries, measure the patient tremor/seizure, and send the data to medical provider via a patient’s smart phone.

  5. Always-armed surveillance, safety and security devices to discover and track moving objects or engage an alarm system in case of intrusion for museums, exhibitions, home/ office/ banking industry, depositaries, or perimeter safety.

  6. Aerially-deployed military sensors to detect tank vibrations, sniper gun noise, even human’s steps, process and communicate the collected data to fusion nodes (micro-servers) of a self-organized multi-hop network.

The self-sustaining, perpetual-use, simple-to-make and inexpensive kinetic micro Generators eliminate the need for and cost of acquisition, maintenance and replacement of conventional batteries for many applications and industries.

*The average human, at rest, produces around 100 watts of power, 300-400 watts via regular physical activity and up to 2,000 watts for burst-of-energy actions like jumping or weight lifting.
